You might have heard: about half the films slated for release in 2020 were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. While, yes, we didn’t totally enjoy watching the deepest, darkest depths of Netflix’s catalog (we’re talking Zombeavers, people) for new movies to watch, there’s a silver lining here. 2021 (like, the whole damn year) is loaded with blockbusters we’d usually only see during the summer months.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…before we get to summer, it’s important to note that the movie release slate this spring is impressive en0ugh on its own. We’ll see the biggest non-Marvel crossover in recent memory when Godzilla vs. Kong drops on HBO Max. Plus, the Mortal Kombat reboot, which might just break the infamous video game movie curse. And Black Widow, finally. (Hopefully.) That’s just a few of what we’re most looking forward to—read on to find our most anticipated movies coming out this spring.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (March 18)
After years of controversy, speculation, and miscellaneous drama, it looks like we’ll finally see Justice League how Zack Snyder envisioned it. Let’s hope it ends up being worth the wait.
Godzilla Vs. Kong (March 31)
Godzilla! Kong! Two large monsters. Presumably, they will fight each other. Who’ll make it out alive? Your guess is as good as mine. (Probably both, though, if we’re being honest. For sequels and such.)
Nobody (April 2)
Is Bob Odenkirk about to go on a Liam Neeson-esque third act of his career? Where he stars in an action-thriller-thieving-drug-lord adventure? Judging by Nobody, where Odenkirk stars as a man with PTSD who battles a Russian drug lord, it certainly looks like it.
Mortal Kombat (April 16)
For the love of God: we need one adaptation of a video game to be so good that it destroys the all-video-game-movies-are-cursed cliche. With James Wan behind the Mortal Kombat reboot, it just might be the live-action take on the uber-popular street fighter series.
Black Widow (May 7)
Here’s hoping that—after what felt like 15 release date changes due to the coronavirus pandemic—we’ll finally get the ScarJo/Black Widow origin story we’ve been wanting since her debut in Iron Man 2.
Free Guy (May 21)
Seems like the irreverent Ryan Reynolds action-comedy is here to stay. Next up? Free Guy, where Ry Ry plays a video game character who begins to realize that he’s… a video game character. Gear up for lots and lots of quips, guns, and running away from explosions.
Spiral (May 21)
You may not know it yet, but you’ve had a hole in your heart ever since the last installment of the Saw franchise in 2017. Bet on the latest reboot of the series, Spiral, to bring back the creeping magic of the OG—thanks to the involvement of Chris Rock.
F9 (May 28)
Han is back! Han is back? Han… is back.
The newest installment in the Fast franchise will introduce us to Dom’s brother, who’s played by John Cena. But we’re really just curious how they’re going to explain how Han. Is. Back.
Luca (June 18)
Considering that Soul gave us some life during the dog days of winter, we can’t wait until Pixar’s next film, Luca—which looks to be a dazzling coming-of-age tale set in the Italian Riviera.
In the Heights (June 18)
Director Jon M. Chu will follow up Crazy Rich Asians with none other than the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. Judging by the goosebumps-inducing trailer, it looks like we’re in for a treat.
