Sure sex is cool, but have you ever Zillowed?
In a clever digital short, Dan Levy and the cast of Saturday Night Live roasted one the hottest trends from the past year: e-browsing for houses. The video opens with cast members Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim channeling old-school phone sex operators. “Are you bored?” purrs Gardner. “Looking for something to spice up your life?” adds Nwodim. The answer, obviously, is yes, and the solution is Zillow.
“Real estate is your sex now,” coo Gardner and Nwodim as the male members of the cast moan in ectasy. Staring at a perfectly plain 4 bedroom/3 bath, cast member Mikey Day screams, “I wanna flip that!” Cut to Dan Levy lost in a day dream about owning a tricked out mansion in a cheaper part of the country. “I’d never live in North Carolina, but if I did, I could buy a big, gross mansion.”
In certain pockets of the internet, people have been using Zillow as a way to imagine life on the other side of the pandemic. Writing for the New York Times, reporter Taylor Lorenz said, “What many are contemplating when they browse Zillow and similar home buying sites — like Redfin, Trulia and Realtor.com — is not necessarily a purchase, but an alternate life. Zillow surfing has become a primary form of escapism for those who want to flee not just their homes but the reality of 2020.”
I confess to being an aspirational Zillower. For me personally, Zillow functions like a fire escape. It’s a quick way for me to get out of my small apartment and far away from the big, abandoned city I’ve been stuck in for a year. Zillowing (yes, it’s a verb now) offers me hope. It also pases the time, and is slightly more productive than my other pandemic hobby: counting my cat’s teeth.
