If you could humor me, please, throw on this heavy metal version of The Mandalorian‘s theme song.
OK. Feel that? You’re ready to read what’s coming now. Heading into the season finale of The Mandalorian, there’s still a ton that we don’t know. (Especially with last week’s episode, which, while an awesome watch, was 90 percent Bill Burr stand-up.) Mainly: What will the fate of the artist formerly known as Baby Yoda, Grogu, be? The kid is trapped with the Imperial baddie, daddy Mando’s on the way, and more likely than not, we’ll see a happy ending for the foster father and son… at least for this season, if you ask Star Wars fans. Because according to a new theory from Reddit user pabspro, Grogu has a one-way ticket to the Dark Side, whether you like it or not.
Last season, we wrote about the possibility that Etsy’s favorite darling might be evil, considering he nearly choked someone to death. Since then, if anything, we’ve only seen more evidence that Grogu might have a little Dark Side in him. When Grogu met Ahsoka Tano, she went off about all the fear she saw in him, which reminded her of an old colleague: Anakin Skywalker. Plus, he ate half of frog lady’s eggs! And he stole cookies from a kid! Then barfed ’em back up. Ungrateful. The Reddit user thinks this is all one big origin story for the next Palpatine in Star Wars lore:
For one thing, the Star Wars universe needs a new villain after Palpatine’s death in Rise of Skywalker. Instead of just dropping in a new villain, there is a deeper connection if the audience is familiar with and emotionally attached to that character. Essentially similar to how the prequels built an emotional connection around Anakin.
I mean, the user isn’t wrong. There are very, very few existing characters in this world that—if they turned evil—would elicit an insane amount of emotion from Star Wars fans, good or bad. And Star Wars does need a new Big Bad, presumably, for whatever will follow the Skywalker Saga. So why not make it Grogu? Sure, it’d be one of the craziest twists this side of I am your father, but you’d have to respect the long con. Plus, wait until you see what the Reddit user thinks will drive Grogu across party lines.
His similarities with Anakin are plentiful – orphaned, taken in by a well-meaning caregiver. Like Anakin, loss will drive him to the dark side – in Grogu’s case it will be the death of Mando, as well as the torture he received from Moff Gideon and the Empire.
RIP Mando?! C’mon. At least wait until 2020 is over.
