Even after a tough loss, the biggest band in the world—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—still brought a technicolor performance to the Grammys on Sunday. BTS lost the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Dynamite” to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me” at the 2021 Grammys, but you wouldn’t know it from their electric performance late in a long show. In sharp, colorful suits, and with high energy, flawless dance moves, and effortless charm, the band brought the Grammys back to life after a lengthy broadcast.
In 2020, BTS became the first Korean act to ever perform at the Grammys, where they accompanied Lil Nas X in a show-stopping performance of “Old Town Road”. In 2019, the group presented an award and were nominated for best recording package, making tonight the K-pop band’s second Grammy nomination. But after their loss, their fan base was not pleased with the Recording Academy, which they felt was taking advantage of BTS’s popularity by inviting them to perform without appropriately awarding them (which is a very real problem with the Grammys). The BTS Army even got #scammys trending on Twitter tonight following their loss.

Wearing Louis Vuitton on the red carpet, the band addressed their fans and their loss with grace, saying that “we’ll work hard for this next year as well and we’ll be back with great music and performances that you can look forward to.”
For the Recording Academy’s sake, hopefully BTS will be back at the Grammys. But, after a performance like what BTS delivered, it’s clear that the Grammys need BTS more than BTS needs the Grammys.
