Oprah went ahead and asked Meghan Markle the question on everyone’s mind during the Sussexes’ tell-all interview: is there any truth to rumors that she and Kate Middleton were “feuding” during Meghan and Prince Harry’s time living at Kensington Palace.
While the Duchess didn’t give too many details, she did shut down rumors that she made Kate Middleton cry ahead of her royal wedding. Meghan told Oprah that “the reverse happened,” adding “I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone because it was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something.” She added that Kate “owned it and she apologized,” and that she “brought me flowers.”
Meghan added that “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something. Yes the issue was correct about flower girl dresses.” Meghan then added that “She made me cry and it really hurt my feelings…. I thought in the context of everything else going on in the days before the wedding, didn’t it make sense to do what everyone else was doing knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.”
Meghan then said she didn’t want to get into details because Kate had “apologized and I [had] forgiven her.” She also added that, “I’m not sharing that piece about Kate to be disparaging to her,” but said “I would hope that she would have wanted that corrected.”
Ultimately, Meghan explained that Kate is “a good person” and said “if you love me you don’t have to hate her and if you love her you don’t have to hate me.”
As a reminder, Kate and Meghan’s alleged “feud” has been the subject of intense speculation since basically the moment Meghan joined the royal family. And while there are a lot of untrue rumors floating around, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand said Kate didn’t do much to welcome Meghan in their book Finding Freedom.
“Though it was not necessarily her responsibility, Kate did little to bridge the divide,” the royal reporters wrote, adding that the duchesses “were not at war with each other” but there were some “awkward moments.”
Additionally, Scobie and Durand reported that Kate and Meghan “struggled to move past distant politeness” and didn’t have much in common “other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace.” They also wrote about an awk time when Meghan and Kate were both going shopping on the same street, and Kate left Meghan to shop alone—legit going a different direction in her Range Rover. According to Vanity Fair, Kate eventually tried to smooth things over by giving Meghan flowers as a peace offering, but Meghan “told Kate in no uncertain terms that flowers were not enough.”
Clearly the flowers were enough, and Meghan has moved on.
