Roomies, it has been nearly two months since former Kansas City Chiefs Assistant coach Britt Reid was involved in a car accident during Super Bowl weekend that tragically injured 5-year-old Ariel Young, who suffered a life-threatening brain injury, a skull fracture, and subdural hematomas. As we previously reported during the accident, Britt told authorities that he had consumed “two to three” drinks after the officer observed an odor of alcohol and his eyes being bloodshot red.
Although it has taken some time, Britt finally has been formally charged for driving under the influence. Reports from KSHB show that the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Britt with DWI-Serious Physical Injury, which is a class D felony. According to the criminal complaint filed it says that Britt acted with criminal negligence by driving at an excessive rate of speed, failing to be aware of a disabled vehicle, striking it, and as a result, causing serious physical injury to a child in one of the vehicles. The charge comes with a potentially lengthy jail sentence of one to seven years. Prosecutors have requested a $100,000 bond.
Tom Porto, the attorney representing Ariel and her family, spoke with NBC News Monday about the charges and stated the family was hopeful for the most serious charge to be filed. That’s what they received. Thankfully Ariel was released from the hospital earlier this month on the 2nd but is still unable to walk or talk due to her injuries. In addition, she cannot eat on her own and is being fed through a feeding tube in her stomach.
