It’s been a long year, a long four years. And on Wednesday, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were inaugurated as the President and Vice President of the United States of America. But, this day of celebration did not end with the annual inauguration ball. Instead, DC rallied a bunch of celebrities to come together (socially distanced, of course) and put on a show for America called Celebrating America.
Bruce Springsteen kicked off the night’s festivities with a sobering performance of “The “Train of Hope and Dreams.” Tom Hanks took the reins of the night’s events, hosting from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Throughout the evening, the series featured a slew of musical guests, as well as poignant moments highlighting the work of teachers, front line workers, and everyday Americans doing their best in difficult times. But it wasn’t all serious. As the night went on, poor Hanks seemed to be visibly affected by Washington’s chilly 35 degree temperature, making us all wonder—where is this man’s coat?
That leads us to social media. Unable to head to Washington to attend the night’s festivities (or even a local bar, for that matter), scores of Americans hit social media to offer commentary, jokes, and yes… even a bit of sincere reflection on watching a presentation that felt bizarrely normal for the first time in four years. Whether you were wowed by the incredible fireworks display, appropriately dazzled by Katy Perry’s “Firework,” or slightly weirded out by Jon Bon Jovi’s strange pre-taped music video of “Here Comes the Sun” in Miami, these were the best social media reactions of the night.
Oh yeah, ps: every inauguration—hell, every public event—should include a performance from the Foo Fighters.
