Just when the world needed it most, Lady Gaga gave us a surprise gift: a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at her upcoming film House of Gucci. The photo, which she posted on Instagram March 9, is a feast for the eyes. For example: Adam Driver in a cream-colored, cable-knit turtleneck sweater. His oversized glasses and wholesome Dad-vibe smile. Lady Gaga in her poofy white hat and cascading gold jewelry, serving a look vaguely reminiscent of The Rock’s iconic ‘90s turtleneck fit. The glamorous snowy mountain top backdrop!
An Instagram photo as rich and bountiful as this sparks endless possibilities for the discourse, and a long list of questions—first and foremost: what is House of Gucci, the film responsible for this dreamy snapshot? Here is everything we know about director Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gucci crime biopic.
It’s Based on a True Story
On March 27th, 1995, Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed outside of his office in Milan, Italy. Maurizio (portrayed in the film by Adam Driver) was a fashion mogul and grandson of Guccio Gucci, founder of the Italian fashion house. He and his wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) had been married since 1972, and were an Italian tabloid favorite for their lavish lifestyle and very public battle for control of Gucci. For a bit of insight into Reggiani’s personality, look no further than this quote she once uttered: “I would rather weep in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle.”

The couple had two daughters together. In 1985, Maurizio went on a “short business trip” which turned out to be his departure from their family, as he left Reggiani for another woman. After this betrayal and the couple’s split, Reggiani openly threatened to kill Maurizio—making her the prime suspect after his murder. Insufficient evidence led to an investigation that stretched on for nearly two years, until a tip in 1997 led to the arrest of Reggiani and the men she allegedly hired to carry out the killing. She was convicted of plotting her husband’s assassination, and sentenced to 29 years in prison for her crime. She served 18 years of her sentence and was released in October 2016. Following her release, a reporter asked, “Patrizia, why did you hire a hitman to kill Maurizio Gucci? Why didn’t you shoot him yourself?” She reportedly replied, “My eyesight is not so good. I didn’t want to miss.”
Scott’s film is based on the novel The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. It follows the stylish, seemingly-charmed life of the couple, the events that led up to Reggiani’s arrangement of Maurizio’s murder, and the aftermath.
Cast, Filming Locations, and Release Date
Wrap your head around the wildly stacked cast tapped to portray other members of the Gucci dynasty. Al Pacino, Jared Leto, and Jeremy Irons will reportedly star in House of Gucci alongside Driver and Gaga. The film is currently shooting on location in Italy, and is slated for release in November 2021.
