In an interview with The Playlist, Thompson confirmed that she will be appearing in 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” as Valkyrie, the hard-drinking warrior from Thor’s home planet. And as hinted at in the conclusion of “Avengers: End Game,” Valkyrie will be the new king of Asgard.
To jog your memory, in one of the final scenes in End Game, Valkyrie finds “Fat Thor” standing atop a windswept cliff, looking out over his kingdom. “So, when can we expect you back?” she asks him. Thor hesitates then says to Valkyrie, “It’s time for me to be who I am rather than who I am supposed to be. But you, you’re a leader. That’s who you are.”
Seemingly up to the task, Valkyrie responds “You know, I’d make a lot of changes around here.” Indeed, she will but so far additional details have been scant. All Thompson said about the new film is that Valkyrie “is definitely King of New Asgard when we find her,” and that “Thor: Love and Thunder” will contain other notable characters from the Marvel comic universe.
“As was the case in the last four, I would say that she’s a part of an adventure that involves Thor, in the sense that it’s called Thor: Love and Thunder. And I’d say there’s some cool stuff going on. We have some new characters; we have some folks potentially from other pockets of the MCU. And then we have some folks, maybe, that we’ve seen before.”
So far we know that Chris Pratt is slated to appear in the film as Star-Lord from “Guardians of the Galaxy.” And since Star-Lord rarely travels alone, it’s safe to assume some of the other hooligans like Groot will pop up in “Thor: Love and Thunder” too. As will Natalie Portman, whose last appearance was in “Thor” in 2011 when she played Dr. Jane Foster. In “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Portman’s Dr. Foster will become the Mighty Thor after the original Thor transfers his powers to her. Taika Waititi, who directed the funky and hilarious “Thor: Ragnarok” is directing the film so hopefully it will have some of the New Zealand director’s signature sense of humor.
