What if your soulmate were a DNA test away? This is the question at the heart of The One, Netflix’s newest Top 10 streaming hit. The British series unfolds like an extended Black Mirror episode, set in a world “five minutes into the future” where scientists have figured out how to use DNA code sequencing to find the one person on earth each person is guaranteed to fall in love with. The story focuses on Rebecca Webb, a geneticist who is co-founder and CEO of The One, an app that offers the chance to take a DNA test with a single strand of hair, and find their one true love. The result unravels life and love as we know it; as millions of people are matched, divorce rates skyrocket. People question whether they’re with the right person, who could be out there for them, and if they should take the plunge by submitting their DNA to find their ultimate match.
The One is part sci-fi thriller, part murder mystery, as the body of Rebecca’s old friend is discovered at the season’s opening. An adaptation of the bestselling novel by John Marrs, the show has a little something for everyone—whether you’re a technology conspiracy theorist, a romantic, or a fan of crime procedurals. The ensemble cast pulls viewers into each of their overlapping stories in this new world; like Hannah, who wonders if her husband Mark would be happier with his one true match, or her friend Lucy, whose partner left her after taking the test and finding his match. The cast features some faces that audiences may recognize from British films and TV shows, and an actor with a famous sibling. Here’s what you need to know the cast of The One.
