Where do we start with this episode? Agatha Harkness’s origin story involves a coven beaming magic to her at the stake, Frankie Muniz—just like, the actor Frankie Muniz—is now canon in the MCU, Vision willingly chose to spend the rest of his life in New Jersey, and Wanda drives a used Nissan! Am I focusing on the wrong things? I’m focusing on the wrong things.
One more time. The penultimate episode of WandaVision—aside from showing us the heartbreaking origins of Westview, which really was born from Wanda’s grief—sets up an incredible season finale. Like massive-comic-book-superhero-fight level of incredible. We find out that Agent Big Bad Tyler Hayward’s grand plan is to make a new Vision from whatever he deciphered from OG Vision’s remains. Turns out he was successful. This week’s mid-credits scene shows that Hayward powered up a new, all-white Vision using energy from the Hex. If you haven’t guessed, that means we’re likely going to see The Battle of Westview go down next week. But first, let’s talk about that creepy, off-white Vis.
OK, so there is a freshly-cleaned-toilet-bowl-looking Vision in the comics. But there’s not much for us to glean from there. There’s a run in the comic books called West Coast Avengers, where a time-traveler shows up and takes Vision apart. When the Avengers find his scraps, Hank Pym tries to rebuild him. He’s only half successful. Vision’s soul isn’t totally there, so he’s colorless and fairly dead. He eventually does develop some emotions, but never totally becomes anything resembling OG Vision again. To be honest: There isn’t much here. You can see why the White Vision thing didn’t totally carry on in the comics. We just love the OG too much.
As for WandaVision? We can fill in the blanks here. From past trailers, we’ve seen footage of Vision and Wanda declaring that Westview is their home—and they’re going to fight for it. This likely happens after White Vision busts up the Hex, threatening to take down Wanda and everything inside of it. You can bet that we’ll see a Marvel-style showdown next Friday. The only TBDs are whether or not Agatha Harkness will side with Wanda, because it just kinda seems like she wants to know where she gets her power from. Plus, the big cameo Paul Bettany has been teasing for weeks now. (Who isn’t someone anyone has guessed yet, apparently. Not even Pietro.)
While we’re on the subject of that cameo: The nudge-nudge, wink-wink award goes to Papa Maximoff. Catch him making the obnoxiously specific word choice of mischief to describe the The Dick Van Dyke Show? Don’t be surprised if Vision’s property deed was a plant, Tyler Hayward isn’t really Tyler Hayward, and strings-pulling Loki really does show up in the season finale.
