When you’re watching a show, you’ll know it when you see it: a character’s fourth-wall-breaking, sometimes cheeky, always knowing, glare into the camera. The one where the character tells you, I know you’re watching me. Hall of fame-level breakers of the fourth wall: Fleabag, House of Cards, The Office (kind of).
If a new fan theory is to be believed, we might have to add WandaVision to that list. Before we get to the theory, you probably already know that Marvel’s latest—which focuses on Wanda Maximoff and Vision after the events of Avengers: Endgame—already has some meta hijinks going on. Each couple of episodes takes place in a different era of TV sitcom history, the whole thing likely acting as a coping mechanism for Wanda after Vision’s seeming death in Avengers: Infinity War. (Someone may or may not be watching this whole thing play out in the real world, by the way!) Anyway. We’re getting in the MCU weeds. In last week’s episode, Vision sits down to tell Wanda that everything might not be as it seems. Not digging the sudden disturbance, Wanda rewinds the moment back a minute, and Vision says something nonsensical instead. In the former moment, TikTok user @llizzymaximoff appears to have caught Vision making a knowing look toward the camera.

Unless Vision’s actor, Paul Bettany, goofed up and looked at the IRL camera in front of his face, the evidence is pretty undeniable here. Our red friend definitely made a nervous-looking glance at whatever’s watching him. But what does it mean? It could beef up evidence for the theory that Doctor Strange is leading Wanda through this trip, posing as Vision to help her recover and return to normal life. Or, maybe, this version of Vision is evil somehow, is in on some sort of nefarious plot to trip up Wanda, and is working with the behind-the-scenes puppeteers. Regardless, it’s definitely something. If we’re going to start living beyond the fourth wall in this show? Let’s invite Phoebe Waller-Bridge to the party for the Fleabag–WandaVision crossover of the century.
