Update: As of Tuesday afternoon, itv has announced that Piers Morgan “has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.” This move follows reports that itv received 41,000 complaints following Morgan’s incendiary comments about Meghan Markle, detailed below.
Rhetorical question: Does Piers Morgan actually exist if he’s not throwing a tantrum on TV? That became the question on Tuesday morning’s installment of Good Morning Britain, when one of Morgan’s colleagues, Alex Beresford, pushed back against one of Morgan’s tirades about Meghan Markle, causing Morgan to storm off the set of the morning show.
Of course, this all stems from the bombshell interview Oprah Winfrey conducted with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on Sunday evening, which aired in the U.K. on Monday night. It is, arguably, the most tea that has been spilled States-side about the Royal Family since 1773. England is reeling, the Royal Family is presumably furious, and Morgan has made it his prerogative to go on tirade after tirade about Markle. Yesterday, it involved bringing Megyn Kelly, a white former NBC anchor with no relevant ties to England, to discuss race politics. Today, he brought Markle’s estranged father onto the program. His and Markle’s relationship has been the subject of British press exploitation for years.
The shenanigans hit a boiling point when Beresford tried to restore a bit of peace, defending Meghan and Harry, saying:
I understand you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this program. A number of times. And I understand you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off. She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about since she cut you off? I din’t think she has, but you continue to trash her.”
At this point, Morgan stood up and stormed off set, saying, “Okay, I’m done with this.”
But Beresford continued: “This is absolutely diabolical behavior. I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis, and we all have to sit there and listen. 6:30 to 7 o’clock yesterday was incredibly hard to watch.”
The personal relationship Beresford mentioned has been discussed by Morgan on several occasions. He insists he is responsible for the two meeting, though that claim has been disputed time and time again.

Morgan’s exodus comes after two days of unhinged rants about Markle. Yesterday, he alleged that Markle was lying about the suicidal thoughts she discussed in her interview with Winfrey. In the past, Morgan has gone as far to say that Markle ripped Harry away from the royal family.
Naturally, Morgan returned to set to interview Markle’s father after tweeting the remark “Now you’re all watching.” He has since gone on to say that he “just prefer[s] not to sit there listening to colleagues call me diabolical,” despite that remark being made as he was already leaving the set. In short, this is not particularly shocking behavior, but more so a prime example of how Morgan works. He speaks over people in cable news-fashion and if that doesn’t work, he exits the scene. If baby needs to throw a fit for ratings, pass the pacifier.
